From Seeking to Being: How to Shift from Spiritual Striving to Grounded Realization
November 25, 202410 Key Desires on the Path of Self-Realization
December 3, 2024
In the pursuit of self-realization, many seekers begin their journey with the idea that there is a path they must follow, a destination they must reach, or a set of practices they must complete to find their true self. However, there is an essential truth that often remains hidden from view: There is no path that leads to yourself.
This paradoxical statement may sound confusing at first, especially in a world where we are conditioned to think in terms of progress, steps, and directions. We are taught to find the “right” path, the “best” route to success, or the “proper” spiritual practice. But in reality, self-realization is not a journey of becoming something we are not—rather, it is a deepening awareness of what we already are. The truth is, we are already whole, complete, and one with the essence of life. We are simply unaware of this reality, and this is where the journey begins—not as a path, but as a profound shift in perception.
The Illusion of the Path
The idea of a “path” implies that something is missing from us, that we need to seek or acquire something that we don’t yet have. We begin to believe that through striving, effort, or achievement, we can eventually “arrive” at our true self. But in truth, the process of seeking often masks the reality that we are already that which we seek. The true self isn’t somewhere in the future—it is right here, now, seemingly obscured by the layers of our conditioned mind, our desires, and our sense of separation from everything else.
When we seek a path, we unknowingly create a journey that leads us to distance ourselves from the very essence we are seeking. The more we try to “become” our true self, the more we are caught in the trap of duality, thinking that we are separate from the very nature we long to realize.
Self-Realization: An Uncovering, Not a Becoming
Rather than a path that leads us somewhere, self-realization is an uncovering of the truth that is already present. It is a shedding of the illusions and beliefs that have obscured our perception of ourselves. It’s about coming back to what is always here, as the presence of awareness beneath the surface of our thoughts and stories.
The journey of self-realization can be seen as a return home—a return to the realization that our essence has never been lost. But rather than a return, t is only a recognition, an awareness that I am and always has been that which is aware – that with which I know my experience. There’s nothing to “attain”, nothing to “become” because we are already that which we seek. When we come to understand this, the need for a “path” falls away, and we can begin to simply knowingly be that which is always present and aware.
Living as Yourself
Once we let go of the idea that we need to “find” ourself, we open up to the possibility of experiencing life more fully in the present moment. This shift in perspective allows us to live with greater ease, peace, and clarity. There is no longer a need to chase after something or someone. We can trust that everything we need is already here, waiting to be revealed.
When we understand that there is no path leading to ourselves, we stop seeking approval, validation, or meaning from external sources. We come to realize that our essence is already ever present and complete, and in this realization, we can finally live authentically, without the constant striving for something we believe we lack.
The Paradox of Self-Realization
There’s an inherent paradox in self-realization: The moment you realize that there is no path to follow, you are already at your destination. The realization itself is the moment of freedom. It’s when the seeker stops seeking, when the mind lets go of its endless desire for more, and simply rests in the knowing that it is already whole.
In this moment, we see that the “path” was never external—it was always a mental construct that led us in circles. True self-realization is not an accumulation of knowledge or experiences but a realization that our essence is and has always been here, beyond time, beyond effort, beyond the need for a destination.
What Can You Do Now?
So, what does this mean for you on your spiritual journey? It means that you don’t have to wait until you’ve reached a certain stage to experience your true nature. You don’t need to go on a quest to “find” yourself. Instead, try to let go of the idea of a path, and simply begin to notice the presence of yourself that is already present.
If you can’t glimpse your true nature, just simply realize “I Am Being” , or “I am aware”- and there it is. The realization of your true nature is recognizing that you are always being yourself, that which you call “me”, or “I”. By doing so, you will gradually peel away the layers that keep you from seeing that you are always here, always unchanging, unperturbable. You’ll begin to see that the search is over, and that the “you” you’ve been looking for was never missing in the first place.
In Conclusion
The path of self-realization is not about a journey to some future goal. It’s a realization of who you already are in every moment. As you recognize that there is no path leading to yourself, you may experience a deep sense of peace and liberation. The search ends when you realize that the truth you’ve been seeking has always been present, all you had to do was to see it.
When you stop seeking and allow yourself to be, the truth of who you are naturally reveals itself. And in this moment, you understand that there is no path that leads to yourself, because you were never separate from yourself to begin with.
